Our Lost Segments
I
I had a dream where I was lost.
We’re running down a rural highway
And the moon is pouring light
Onto fields and barns and houses of worship
And I look up
To see a cloud formation that looks precisely like a map of the U.K.
And I truly forget where I am
And how I came here.
I was afraid you wouldn’t understand.
II
When I was 6 years old I cut a worm in half with a stick
And then, crying, ran inside.
“Why did I do it?”
Mother smiles and pulls me close.
Father laughs: “Beats me, kid.”
The rain floods the windows in patterns
And I don’t sleep that night.
III
I’ve been living with my mind turned off
But sometimes when I accidentally flip its switch
I hear scratches and hisses
Of pasts I once knew
Or might have known
Had my senses been keener.
The present is an overwhelming question.
IV
In one dream, I’m not lost,
I simply don’t know where I am.
The sky is pink and I like this place.
In some reality, I’m 8 years old.
I learn that worms have the ability
“To regenerate lost segments of themselves”
And I smile.
V
It’s 6:35 a.m. and perfectly still
And I feel lost.
The word future unnerves me,
As does forever.
I’m prepared to remain.
I’m certain to stand just so.
It’s perfectly still.
I listen to my own breath
And over and over and over
There’s a mantra in my head:
They have the ability to regenerate lost segments of themselves.
If the universe opened up and swallowed us all today, would we be substantial enough to quell its hunger?
